Kathy Griffin, the quick-witted, Emmy-nominated
performer best known for her role as spunky, sassy, totally cool,
redhead Vicki in the hit sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” set the stage
ablaze on February 23rd at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las
Vegas. Her comedic talents brightly shined through as she went on a
rampage, telling stories about the “A-list” stars as she “ALLEGEDLY”
sees them. This funny lady is not only a true comedy genius, but she
is also so darn likeable and funny. Kathy, in my opinion, already
ranks as a comedy legend! I cannot tell you how much I love Kathy’s
unique, ALMOST over-the-top style of humor. She stands on
stage, adorable, and effortlessly, sporting a jeans outfit, a
microphone, a mic stand, and two bottled waters. There she is, for
two hours, telling ad-libesque, gossipy stories that we all would
tell our own friends; only she makes them hysterically funny. Kathy
is completely original, for she COPIES no one (unlike most
comediennes)… I LOVE THIS GIRL! She tells it like it is, only with a
funny twist. I applaud her courage for saying out loud what we are
all really thinking.
This new show was up-to-the-minute topical. She hit
on just about EVERYTHING that has recently been in the
news. Kathy RAN out on stage to a five-minute standing-ovation
before she even uttered a word, and kept this tempo for two solid
hours. She did begin by SADLY and humbly telling the audience how
grateful she was for us, as her father passed away six days prior to
the show. That didn’t stop Kathy. She loved her father very much and
that is why she went on with the show. In true STAR style, every
time she hit on one of her “A-list” victims, she said, “it’s the
grief talking” (which of course only made it all that much funnier)!
Some of Kathy’s victims included Britney Shears (but of course),
Tyra Banks, George Foreman, Michael Jackson (how could she possibly
resist him), Paris (that’s another given, not to mention easy), and
the Astro-nut. She went on to destroy Paula Abdul and Simon, Rush
Limbaugh and Michael J. Fox (which I particularly enjoyed!), Whitney
Houston and THE Bobby Brown, Courtney Love (who is total “candy” to
a comic), Scientology…Tom Cruise, and John Travolta, Mel Gibson’s
demise (loved this bit as well), Angelina, Madonna, Star Jones
(another piece of Kathy-candy), Sharon Stone, AND her beloved
up-scale gays, (my favorite!!). She doesn’t stop there! Kathy had no
mercy for Clay Aiken, Lindsay Lohan and Larry King. She went on to
explain, “I was raised right. I talk about people behind their
backs… it’s called manners!”
What I particularly find so amazing about Kathy and
her talent is this: MOST comics use the SAME material over and over
again, never changing or updating a thing. Furthermore, they also
have writers. Kathy is her own writer and her show was completely
new. She repeated nothing that she has done before, even the bits
she is so famous for performing. Everything in her show is fresh,
hilarious, original, and delivered like only Kathy Griffin can do. I
JUST LOVE THIS GIRL!
She claims she hates children because they are so
selfish! “The first time a 3-month-old asks me how my day was, I
might change my mind!”
She talks about her “SHMEMMY” nomination instead of
her Emmy nomination because her category didn’t merit being a part
of the television awards show. She goes on to talk about how bitter
she was when she lost and what she went on to do about it. The
audience was roaring. I completely embarrassed myself as I
disgustingly snorted like a pig until I cried. GEE, THANX KATH!!
Kathy has done guest starring roles on “ER” and
“Seinfield.” She then landed her own "HBO Half Hour Comedy Special."
In 1998, HBO gave Kathy her own one-hour special, "A Hot Cup of
Talk.” Griffin has brought life and voice to characters on the
animated series, "Dilbert" and "The Simpsons," and she appeared in a
dual role on the "X-Files" as well as in Eminem’s video, "The Real
Slim Shady." You probably also enjoyed Kathy when she hosted “The
Billboard Music Awards” three years in a row; and appeared on
several talk shows including "Late Night with David Letterman," "The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Howard Stern" and "The View," as well
as having been featured in the films "It’s Pat" and "Four Rooms."
If all of this isn’t impressive enough, this
talented young woman has performed very successful stand-up specials
for Bravo: in 2005, "Kathy Griffin...Is Not Nicole Kidman" and in
2006, "Strong Black Woman" and “Allegedly.”
In August 2005, Kathy’s reality show, "Kathy
Griffin: My Life on the D-List," was aired on Bravo to outrageous
rave reviews. The second season of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the
D-List" was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Reality
Program.
Kathy closed her fantastic show (we are on a first
name basis, Kath and I), by doing ten minutes on her CATHOLIC
mother. This bit was so funny, it alone was worth the price of
admission. The more she went on, the more the audience went crazy
with delight. I won’t spoil it for you; go catch the show and laugh
yourself! YES, you will be back on your feet for five more minutes
screaming for more, as we all did!!! It is Vegas, so she can only do
so much time.
I was captivated, mesmerized, and blown-away by
Kathy Griffin’s memorable performance. I truly could have sat there
for 2 more hours at least! She is the girl we would all love to have
over, ‘to do lunch with and dish’! Comedy-fans DON’T miss the
opportunity to see Kathy when she appears locally. It is an
experience like no other! You will be laughing for 2 solid hours
with no mercy. Heck, you will be laughing long after her exit! “THE”
Kathy Griffin may be on the “D-list”, but as far as I am concerned,
she is on my A+ comedy list! I TOTALLY LOVE THIS GIRL!
Look for Kathy’s third (reality show) season coming
out in June! I, for one, can’t
wait!
