Johnny Mathis: Still Bringing the
Romance
Johnny

Robin Roth
Legendary Johnny Mathis,
glowing with class and charisma, WOWED his audiences at the
beautiful Las Vegas Hilton over Thanksgiving weekend. Walking out
without introduction to a standing ovation only reminds us of what a
true star this man is and what his music has given all of us over
the years. Let’s face it, there is only one Johnny Mathis and he is
truly better than ever. His voice was strong, passionate and clean.
Furthermore, there is only one “king of romantic voices” and that
voice, without a doubt, belongs to Johnny Mathis! He magically cast
a spell of romance, love, and serenity over the entire crowd with
his unique voice and calm presence. His performance was absolutely
wonderful. If one was there without a loved one, a loved one was
there in one’s heart. You can’t help it, sitting there listening to
Johnny’s sweet, beautiful, ballads with his tender vocals that
caress each and every lyric. Everyone was completely captivated,
listening to Mathis sing hit after hit. It is so easy to sit back
and listen to him, as he sings with such tremendous ease. The music
he sings, whether it’s an up tune or ballad, just flows effortlessly
from his heart. It was especially nice hearing him sing his holiday
hits while sporting a Santa hat. This show simply put was fabulous,
very festive, and quite LOVELY!
Appearing on the stage with
Johnny Mathis were over 30 of the finest musicians (including a full
string section, a harp, as well as keyboards, drum and complete horn
sections) I have ever heard in my life. That in-and-of-itself was a
musical experience! TRULY outstanding!
Mathis was born in
Texas on Sept. 30, 1935, which is an unbelievable fact, as he only
looks about 40 years old in person. In 1954, he enrolled at San
Francisco State College with the intention of being and English and
Physical Education teacher. Lucky for the world, fate changed his
plans. Over the course of his career, Mathis has been honored by
entertainment heads of state, as well as Presidents and Royalty. In
1972, he was awarded his own star on the famous Hollywood Walk of
Fame. He has also received two Grammy nominations, one for “Misty”
and the other for “In a Sentimental Mood.” Johnny is one of only
five recording artists to have Top 40 Hits spanning each of the four
decades since 1955. In addition, he has been inducted into the
Grammy Hall of Fame two times so far. He was also awarded the
prestigious Hitmaker Award.
There is something very special
about seeing Johnny Mathis live and hearing him sing “Chances Are”
and “Misty.” DON’T MISS HIM when he comes to your city! It is
something very special to be a part of. Two warnings! DON’T walk in
late and DON’T bring your young children. This is a night of perfect
singing, LOVE and romance.
Stay tuned for my next article on
