The Blonde and The Maven and Margaret Cho

by The Blonde and The Maven
Contributing Writers

For those of you looking for a night of comedy, Margaret Cho will be appearing at The Broward Center on Friday, May 6th. She is one funny lady, and you won't want to miss her new show. If you're not familiar with this talented comedian, The Blonde and The Maven would just love to fill you in.
Margaret Cho was born on December 5, 1968 (a Sagittarius) in San Francisco, California. Her mother (who figures prominently in Cho's act) resisted an arranged marriage in Korea and married Margaret's dad, who writes joke books in Korean. Margaret began performing at 16 years of age. Soon after, she won a comedy contest in which the prize was opening for Jerry Seinfield. (NOT BAD!). In the early ‘90s she moved to L.A. to join the comedy circuit. She hit the college campuses, where she became the most sought-after comedy act in the market. She won the Campus Comedian of the Year Award. Margaret also had the opportunity to appear on the Arsenio Hall television show and the Bob Hope Special. In no time, she became a national celebrity. In 1994, ABC wrote her a sitcom called “The All-American Girl" that was based on her own unique brand of humor. After the completion of her television show, Margaret developed an off-Broadway, one-woman show called, “I'm the One that I Want.” The show was so successful that a concert film of the same name was made and broke the record for THE MOST money grossed per print in movie history. Quite impressive! If all this wasn't enough, Margaret came out with her best-selling book I’m the One that I Want and, in 2001, launched her “Notorious C.H.O. Tour.” This tour was a smash hit in 37 cities. In addition, it was sold-out at Carnegie Hall. Following this comedy hit, Cho was in another feature film. Showtime acquired both of her films and shows them periodically. In 2003, Margaret began her “Revolution Tour,” heralded as her strongest show yet, and the CD was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Comedy Album of the Year category. In August of 2004, Margaret Cho was honored by the ACLU of Southern California. Ramona Ripston said, “In these very troubled times, when the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution are in jeopardy, we applaud your courage to speak out about the dangerous policies of the Bush administration and your commitment to organize others to do the same. More than ever before, this country needs activists and artists like you to stand up and let their voices be heard.”
The Blonde and The Maven sat down and had a cool conversation with Margaret Cho about her life…

The Blonde: By the way, Maven, Margaret Chow and I have been GREAT friends for like 15 years.

The Maven: A-HUH, and the name (OF YOUR GREAT FRIEND) is MARGARET CHO… NOT CHOW!

The Blonde:  UM, OK… Now THAT was a type-o??…

Margaret Cho: It is amazing! We just started my all-new tour. It's called “The Assassin Tour” and it's going all over the world.  It is so exciting. It's going great and I REALLY enjoy touring. I enjoy the whole process.

Then The Blonde and The Maven began asking Margaret some up-close-and-personal questions, to which she had NO trouble answering. She is honest, REAL, forthright, intelligent, funny, political and most articulate.

B & M: What was your best career moment?

Margaret Cho: It's all great! The best part, though, is when the tour is finished! It is very rewarding.

B & M: If you could do anything over in your life, what would you want to change?

Margaret Cho: I would be a little more self-supportive and kinder. I drove myself really hard for years and so I think I didn't enjoy my career as much as I should have. I would like to take things slower and enjoy things more.

B & M: What are you most proud of?

Margaret Cho: I’m most proud of the fact that I am still working AND I have been doing this for over 20 years.

B &M: What are you most disappointed in?

Margaret Cho: I’m disappointed that I haven't been able to make more movies!  But…I am coming out with one soon called Bam Bam and Celeste. Doing films, I find, is fulfilling and gives me more insight. I am also coming out with a book later this year called I Have Chosen to Stay in Spite.

B &M: We are real popcorn lovers. Does popcorn really smell like yak butter?

Margaret Cho: Oh, yes it does. If you go to Tibet or any Buddhist temple, it smells like the lobby of any movie theater.

B & M: Are you surprised that so many people are shocked that the FCC now wants to censor cable and satellite?

Margaret Cho: I am surprised that people are chocked! I've been expecting it for a long time. The whole thing about censorship has gotten worse and worse gradually over the last couple of years.

B & M: What are your favorite foods?

Margaret Cho: I love popcorn, too! I like sweet and salty.

B & M: Is there anything political you want to say?

Margaret Cho: I think people need to get really involved and active in speaking out against the Bush administration. I think it's a really difficult time for everybody, politically, and we are in the midst of this really corrupt system where people are making a lot of money off of us and it is very scary. It is NOT a good time, politically. People need to get really freaked out about it, I think.

The Blonde: OH, OH, OH! I am so glad you brought this up, Marg!  Let me tell you exactly what I think about all of this…

The Maven: ABSOLUTELY NOT! WE WILL NOT GO THERE! Margaret, please do NOT get The Blonde started…EVEN YOU WILL BE SORRY!

The Blonde: Marg, don't listen to her! You and I have to talk. I'll come over later! I will bring the popcorn!

B & M: What is your passion?

Margaret Cho: My passion is creativity, my work, dance and the arts.

B & M: What makes you angry?

Margaret Cho: Injustice, war, violence, needless hatred, homophobia and all these things that are kind of happening right now.

The Blonde: Well, IF KERRY WAS ELECTED…

The Maven: Okay Margaret, go ahead and continue! I just put a SOCK in the Blonde's mouth!

The Blonde: Ohoi  ouou   ouoh  joiu o   oiy!

B & M: What makes you laugh?

Margaret Cho: My favorite comics and people who are different and ingenious and people that make movies like Christopher Guest (Best in Show). I am a big fan of comedy. I was inspired and influenced by a lot of people coming up, like Whoppi Goldberg, Paula Poundstone, and Rosanne.

The Maven: Oh we agree!

The Blonde:  IOYU, IO, U, OOIZI, XDUF!

B & M: What would you like to see in your future?

Margaret Cho: I would like to do more movies! I would like to do movies and comedy for the rest of my life. I love it!

The Blonde: Thank you, Maven, for REMOVING the dirty sock! Oh Marg, me too, on your last statement! I just love making movies.

The Maven: Oh really, Blonde, and can you tell our readers your last picture?

The Blonde: I don't need this inquisition, Maven, or your socks! And besides, this is all about Margaret!

B & M: What do you want people to know about you?

Margaret Cho: I want people to know that I am concerned about the world and that I want people to wake up to what's really happening. I want people to become really concerned about it too.

B & M: In closing, Margaret, is there anything else you’d like to add?

Margaret Cho: Just that my mom is in the upcoming movie and I also talk about her in my new show. The show is very personal, so I want everyone to come see it!

The Blonde: Thanks, Marg, and I'll be over shortly.

The Maven: I'll come later to bring the yak butter for the popcorn!
